Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Wisdom tooth extraction or wisdom tooth removal is a commonly performed oral surgery procedure at Norton Dental Barrie.

Wisdom teeth are one of the most frequent patient complaints treated by our dental professionals. Typically wisdom teeth removal is recommended between the ages of 17 and 25. Wisdom teeth that are not removed may result in crowding, impactions or infection.

Wisdom tooth pain may include toothache, bad breath, swelling, jaw stiffness, difficulty swallowing or biting, or difficulty opening the mouth. In some cases, wisdom tooth symptoms go unnoticed by the patient such as in the form of gum disease and decay. These silent symptoms are easily identified through regular dental exams and cleanings.

During your wisdom tooth extraction consult, your oral health will be evaluated by one of our dental professionals to determine if wisdom tooth extraction is an appropriate treatment option for you. General anesthesia is typically used for most wisdom tooth removal cases. However, Norton Dental Barrie offers sedation dentistry to apprehensive patients for an anxiety-free experience.

After the wisdom teeth are removed and your procedure is complete, you will rest under our supervision until you are comfortable enough to be taken home. Any minor bleeding can be controlled by biting on a soft piece of gauze. You will be given pain medication and antibiotics before leaving our office.

Post operative instructions will be explained and you will be given a wisdom tooth removal aftercare kit. Norton Dental Barrie also offers emergency wisdom tooth removal for patients in need of immediate pain relief.

After wisdom teeth removal, your body will need to rest. Prop your head up with pillow rather than lying flat and applying an ice pack to your cheek will help to reduce swelling. Wisdom tooth removal foods include pudding, soup and other soft foods. You may re-introduce solid foods in your diet once you begin to heal.

Wisdom tooth removal recovery time is a few days. Patients are advised against rigorous physical activity after wisdom tooth extraction to prevent further bleeding.

Wisdom tooth removal complications may arise from smoking less than 24 hours after the oral surgery procedure. Smoking interferes the with the body's ability to heal, decreases the blood supply and can attract germs and bacteria to the surgical site. Wisdom tooth removal complications may also occur from drinking through a straw directly after the procedure as doing so can loosen the blood clot.

Wisdom tooth removal cost may vary depending on the complexity of each case and whether additional procedures are required for a safe and successful wisdom tooth extraction.
